I'd double check that info Harry. Nascar and all the formula cars run a honda style journal or Jaguar journal and make well over 800HP. I believe the Prostock guys are running a Honday style journal as well. Its the only way to they can reach their target RPM.
The thought of requiring a wider surface area to support a boastful HP figure isn't correct. Escort Racing uses a stock crankshaft with stock rod journal dimensions. Electromotive utilized a stock Nissan journal as well. There is no room to accept a wider rod bearing on the stock VG crankshaft. If you buy wider bearings you'll have to reduce the width by using a bearing knife so that the cheeks of the crank do not come in contact with the bearing. Not to mention there just isn't enough material left if one were to machine clearance into the crank to adopt a wider bearing. Hence the requirement for side clearance. Not to mention there is a radial groove for oil exit on each side of the journal. If this is blocked you will have significant issues.
